Mizoram government has taken a firm stand against collecting biometric data from Myanmar refugees residing in the state, citing potential violations of their rights.
This decision to gather biometric information from over 30,000 Myanmar nationals who sought refuge in Mizoram following the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021 faced strong opposition from the state government.

The pilot project aimed at recording biometric data was launched in all 11 districts of Mizoram, with a primary focus on relief camps. However, the administration, led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, expressed reservations about the potential infringement on the rights of the refugees.

This development comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs had initially instructed both Manipur and Mizoram to collect biometric details of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, setting a deadline of September 30. Mizoram encountered delays as the original data collection format had to be modified to accommodate information from Myanmar nationals.

It is noteworthy that the Mizoram government had previously undertaken efforts to profile Myanmar nationals and independently issued identity cards to them.
