The state is known for its moderate climate, but environmentalists and weather scientists are warning that it may soon bid farewell to it. The rate at which Aizawl's temperature is rising is even higher than the estimated minimum rate of global warming for the next 50 years.

The change in climate is attributed to rapid deforestation, mainly due to slash-and-burn cultivation, and unplanned urbanisation. The state lacks a proper meteorological observatory to obtain detailed knowledge on climatic changes in Aizawl.

Meanwhile, the administration in Lawngtlai district changed school hours from 9 AM-3 PM to 6 AM-9 AM, and the state school education department issued instructions to not engage students in outdoor activities and provide sufficient drinking water.
