National Green Tribunal approach against NHIDCL for violating environmental laws

Aizawl, 11 Feb (Zoram News): Youth for Environmental Justice Mizoram (YEJM) and the Center for Environmental Protection (CEP) have tried to file a complaint with the National Green Tribunal against NHIDCL for violating environmental laws.

YEJM has earlier filed a petition in the National Green Tribunal on the destruction of the Tlawng Hnar Reserve, which is the source of water for Lunglei and Aizawl cities and generates employment for many families.

The centrally owned NHIDCL is currently executing widening or expansion works on various national highways across Mizoram. They said that NHIDCL doesn’t take a concrete step to dispose of soil in a proper manner, displaying an exceptional signboard, and alleged that the state government is also not taking sincere measures to pursue NHIDCL to ascertain whether or not the construction company is respecting the government's orders in order to prevent environmental damages.

Mizoram The Riverine Reserve Forest (RRF) Notification 1965, protecting 16 major rivers in the state, has been in force for many years, which has prevented some poor people from claiming Tuirial Hydel Project Compensation, which was petitioned in the Guwhati High Court, and the Mizoram government has not taken enough steps to win the case. Since then, they have withdrawn the appeal Center for Environmental Protection (CEP) has filed a petition in the High Court Principal Bench, Guwahati
