1,000 more from Myanmar flee to Mizoram after fresh conflict

Mar 6, 2022 (TNN): Over 1,000 people from Myanmar’s Chin state fled the country and took shelter in neighbouring Champhai district of Mizoram early on Saturday morning following fresh armed conflict between resistance forces and the Tatmadaw (armed forces of Myanmar), reports HC Vanlalruata.

Lalmuanpuia, village council president (VCP) of Zokhawthar, told TOI that they are already hosting 2,738 refugees from Myanmar, before 1,000 more from Khawmawi village and surrounding areas arrived on Saturday morning. Lalmuanpuia said that while a number of refugees stayed with their relatives and friends, the rest of them are lodged in the commerce and industries department buildings and other government facilities, as Zokhawthar is the centre for Indo-Myanmar border trade where several buildings, including warehouses, were already constructed.

The local Young Mizo Association (YMA) volunteers provided food and other assistance to the new arrivals, he said.
