Mizoram’s Strategic Border Location Strengthens India’s Act East Policy: Governor

Aizawl, 20 Feb (Zoram News): V. K. Singh, Governor of Mizoram, said on Friday that the state’s strategically important international borders with Myanmar to the east and Bangladesh to the west significantly reinforce India’s Act East Policy, giving Mizoram a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s engagement with Southeast Asia in the evolving global context.

Governor V. K. Singh addressing a Statehood Day event in Aizawl, underscoring Mizoram’s strategic role in advancing India’s Act East Policy
Speaking on the occasion of Mizoram Statehood Day, the Governor highlighted recent infrastructure milestones that strengthen this strategic position. He noted the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang New Railway Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, which connected Aizawl to the Indian rail network for the first time — a development that has boosted passenger convenience, freight movement and tourism growth in the state.

He also referenced the recent launch of the Silchar–Sairang direct passenger train service in February 2026, which is expected to further enhance regional connectivity.

The Governor’s remarks drew attention to the importance of improved connectivity and infrastructure as catalysts for economic integration with neighbouring countries under the Act East Policy framework, aimed at enhancing links with ASEAN nations. Mizoram’s cross-border trade potential has long been recognised — including land custom stations at border towns such as Zokhawthar, which facilitate commerce with Myanmar and contribute to regional economic activity.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi also extended their congratulations to the people of Mizoram on Statehood Day, while Chief Minister Lalduhoma reiterated the state government’s commitment to advancing development and strengthening ties with both national and international partners.
