Mizoram Begins Preparations for First Major Electoral Roll Overhaul in Over Two Decades

Aizawl 24 Feb (Zoram News): Mizoram is gearing up for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its electoral rolls, scheduled from April to June 2026, marking the first comprehensive voter list update in the state since 2004. The exercise, conducted under the supervision of the Election Commission of India (ECI), aims to strengthen electoral integrity by updating voter entries and correcting discrepancies.

Mizoram is finalising preparations for its first Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls since 2004. The SIR, slated for April–June 2026, aims to update voter lists, improve polling access, and enhance data accuracy across the state’s 40 Assembly constituencies.
Preparatory work has nearly concluded, with the State’s election machinery completing key logistical arrangements. Officials from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Mizoram’s office confirmed that training programmes for District Election Officers (DEOs), Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been completed across all districts. A workshop to brief political parties on the SIR process is set for February 27.

Why This Revision Matters

The SIR process is a nationwide initiative by the ECI to ensure up-to-date and accurate voter lists across all States and Union Territories. For Mizoram, this revision is particularly noteworthy due to its long interval — over 20 years since the last intensive update in 2004. The exercise helps:

  • Remove ineligible voter names (including deceased and duplicate entries)
  • Add newly eligible electors
  • Rationalise polling units for improved voter convenience
  • Ensure compliance with ECI norms that no polling station serves more than 1,200 voters

Officials have also undertaken a rationalisation review to ensure polling stations — now 1,353 across 40 Assembly constituencies — meet ECI’s voter load guidelines, compared to just 795 polling stations in 2004. The updated data will be integrated into ERONET, the national electoral roll management system, enabling robust maintenance and transparency of voter data.

What Voters Should Expect

Once launched in April, the SIR will proceed in a structured, time-bound manner, during which eligible residents can:

  • Submit claims for new voter registration
  • File objections and corrections to existing entries
  • Engage with Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by recognised political parties

Election authorities emphasise that this systematic revision is designed to strengthen democratic participation in Mizoram ahead of upcoming electoral cycles, ensuring an accurate and inclusive voter base.
