Cyclone Remal Causes Death and Destruction in Aizawl

Aizawl, 28 May 28(Zoram News): Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc in Aizawl, leading to devastating landslides and floods across several localities including Melthum, Hlimen, Falkawn, and Salem Veng. The calamity has claimed 27 lives so far, with search and rescue operations ongoing.

Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working in tandem with the Melthum Local Council and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) to find survivors and recover bodies. 

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Disaster Management and Rehabilitation (DM&R) Minister K. Sapdanga were on-site at Melthum, overseeing the relief efforts along with other government officials.

Both the Power and Electricity (P&E) and Public Health Engineering (PHE) departments have issued notices that electricity and water supplies will be interrupted until further notice due to damaged infrastructure.

In response to the disaster, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the establishment of a ₹15 crore State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF). Additionally, an ex-gratia payment of ₹4 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased individual. Immediate relief of ₹2 lakh will be given to the kin of those deceased in Hlimen, with the remaining amount to be disbursed later in accordance with SDRF guidelines. Other affected districts will also receive necessary funds from the SDRF.

The search and rescue operations continue as authorities strive to manage the aftermath of Cyclone Remal's devastating impact on the region.
