Hailstorm damage houses in western Mizoram

Aizawl, 22 April (Zoram News): At least 162 houses in Mamit district, located in western Mizoram bordering Tripura and Bangladesh, suffered damage due to heavy rain and hailstones on Saturday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as of yet, according to an official statement on Sunday.

Vanlalchhuanawma Chawngthu, the SDO of West Phaileng, informed that three villages within Mamit's West Phaileng sub-division were hit by heavy rain and hail on Saturday evening. Hailstones damaged 98 houses in Lallen village, 27 houses in Chhippui, and 37 others in Kawnmawi village.

Chawngthu added that the extreme weather caused around 61 houses, including 40 in Lallen, 13 in Chhippui, and 8 in Kawnmawi, to be uninhabitable.

The Mamit Deputy Commissioner, V.L. Remliana, confirmed that the district administration, along with local MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo, had provided tarpaulins to the affected families. The three affected villages are part of the Dampa assembly constituency.

Sailo, who rushed to the affected villages on Saturday evening, also extended relief to the people there. Meanwhile, BJP sources revealed that the State BJP president, Vanlalhmuaka, has offered monetary aid to the affected villages.
