The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has criticized the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for not following the order of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change
The NHIDCL has been reprimanded for carrying out the road widening work of National Highway 54 in Mizoram without obtaining the necessary approval from the ministry.

The NGT's eastern bench, led by Justice Amit Sthalekar and expert member Dr. Afroz Ahmed, slammed NHIDCL for its indiscriminate disposal of construction waste, which has caused extensive damage to the environment and biodiversity, posing a threat to the rivers and streams. The bench heard a petition filed by  social and environmental activist who accused the NHIDCL of violating several stay orders issued by the state environment, forests, and climate change department.

The NGT bench has ordered NHIDCL to comply with the stay orders and take note of the fact that illegal muck disposal can harm the ecology and biodiversity of the state. The bench has directed the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, the state forest department, and NHIDCL to provide their responses within four weeks. This case is considered serious, and NHIDCL is expected to take appropriate action to address the NGT's concerns.
