Mizoram has potential to produce nearly 800 megawatts of energy

Aizawl, 21 March (Zoram News)On Monday, officials from Mizoram's power and electricity department informed Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati that the state has plans for the development of five hydroelectric projects that have the potential to produce nearly 800 megawatts of energy. The officials, led by Power Secretary H Lalengmawia, shared that detailed project reports (DPRs) for the five projects have already been prepared.

Governor Kambhampati, who had previously discussed the hydroelectric potential of the state with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advised the power and electricity department to collaborate with the Ministry of Power, Government of India to fine-tune the available DPRs for presentation at the PMO. Additionally, the Governor urged the department to explore the possibility of utilizing the resources of major public sector undertakings (PSUs) for implementing some of the proposed projects.

Currently, a significant portion of the state's electricity requirements are met by importing from outside sources such as AGBPP(NEEPCO), AGTCCP(NEEPCO), Baramura -IV(TPGL), Baramura -V(TPGL), and Palatana plants. As a result, the state spends approximately Rs 400 crore annually for the purchase of power from external sources.

During the review meeting, officials also discussed the potential for power generation from solar plants in the state. The officials reported that DPRs for Kolodyne -II HEP (460 Mw), Tuival HEP (210 Mw), Bairabi Dam Project (80Mw), Tuirini HEP (24 Mw), and Tuivawl HEP (24 Mw) have been prepared.
