Aizawl, 21 March (Zoram News):  Governor visit Zoram Medical College (ZMC)  which is the only medical college in Mizoram and is currently run by a society formed under the Government of Mizoram, with affiliation to Mizoram University and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Upon his arrival, the Governor was welcomed by Principal Secretary Pi Esther Lal Ruatkimi, Director Dr. John Zohmingthanga, Registrar Dr. Jane R Ralte, and other faculty members of the institute. Governor Kambhampati inspected several wards and a state-of-the-art Operation Theatre at the hospital block.

Afterward, the Governor was invited to the academic block where he interacted with MBBS students and inspected the existing facilities. Subsequently, an interactive meeting between the Governor and the institute's faculty was held at the Council Room. Before the interaction, Governor Kambhampati was briefed on the history and progress of ZMC, as well as the ongoing initiatives to achieve recognition by the NMC.

During the interaction with ZMC's faculty, the Governor expressed appreciation for their enthusiasm and determination to lay the groundwork required for recognition by the NMC. He advised the Principal Secretary and the Director to coordinate with all the Heads of Departments to come up with proposals for improving medical equipment and apparatus in each department. He also advised them to design a mechanism for students to gain helpful exposure to the day-to-day operations at the Civil Hospital, Aizawl. The Governor suggested pulling funds through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from big Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for setting up critical infrastructures to meet NMC criteria.

ZMC has an annual intake capacity of 100 students and fills seats based on a quota system of 70% state quota, 15% All India Quota (NEET), and 15% NRI Quota. The college currently has 488 MBBS students, with 218 male and 270 female students. The first batch of the college will pass out in 2024, after completing the internship and housemanship. ZMC has 698 staff members, including 144 faculties and 554 non-teaching staff. The institute has 225 residential quarters on campus.

ZMC's attached hospital provides 24x7 services with transportation facilities available to and from Aizawl City and surrounding villages. Currently, there are 38 ICU beds, 470 beds for patients, 7 (+3) Major Operation Theatres (OT), 2 (+4) Minor OT, and 20 beds in Casualty. The attached hospital has three oxygen plants with a total capacity of 1500 LPM - PSA. ZMC is also running three research units - Model Rural Health Research Unit, Viral Residential Diagnosis Lab, and Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit.
