Aizawl, 30 July 2021(Zoram News): The Youth Congress units of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland have demanded the removal of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of being “responsible for the worsening tensions between the North-Eastern states.”

Referring to the recent incident of violent clashes and exchange of fire between the police forces of Mizoram and Assam that left six people dead and several injured, the Youth Congress presidents of the aforementioned states in a joint statement on Wednesday said: “such incidents and the use of police force has increased dramatically since the appointment of Sarma as the chief minister of Assam.”

“It is under his chief ministership that situations have deteriorated and incidents of unprovoked aggression have spiked from the Assam administration. Going by his actions, we strongly believe that Sarma is not fit to hold the august position of the chief minister of Assam and we demand that he is removed from his post by the BJP leadership so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere in the North East again,” the Youth Congress leaders said.

The Youth Congress also condemned the “ever-increasing incidents of aggression and force used by the Assam government against its neighbouring states in the past few years.”

“Civilians living at the bordering states of Assam bear the brunt of these aggressions, where farms lands and crops and infrastructures are damaged forcibly, and the civilians are harassed and intimidated frequently by the Armed Assam Police,” the statement said.

The Youth Congress said these incidents are causing a lot of ill-feeling amongst the people of North East India, and have caused serious damage to the unity of the North-Eastern states. The worsening of tensions shows the total failure of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), and ensuing situations have proven yet again that the NEDA was never created for the development and unity of the North-Eastern states, but to grab political power in the North-East by any means necessary, the statement read.
