Lalrintluangi becomes first Mizo woman to summit Mt Everest

Aizawl, 21 May: Lalrintluangi is a student of KM Higher Secondary School, and the fourth child of Lalbiaknipuia and B Lalzirthangi. She has four siblings, one among them younger to her.

She joined the 1st battalion Mizo NCC in 2013 and began preparing to climb the mountain along with three other girls from Mizoram.

At least 10 girls from the north-east region made it to the final round of screening for the expedition’s members. Lalrintluangi eventually turned out to be the only girl from the region to make the final cut. Mizo woman reached the peak of Mount Everest an hour before noon on Saturday (May 21) to become the first woman from the community to summit the world’s tallest mountain.

Nineteen-year-old Lalrintluangi of Aizawl’s Dawrpui Vengthar locality was part of the 10-member All India NCC Girls’ Mount Everest expedition team that began attempting the climb on May 3.

They steadily made their way up the mountain and was able to leave the mountain’s last base camp on May 18 to head for the mountain-top, according to Mizo mountaineer David Zohmangaiha, the first Mizo to summit Mt Everest.

As this story was being reported, Lalrintluangi and others in the expedition are said to be on the way down from the top of the world, he said.
