No virgin forest in Mizoram

Aizawl, March 13 - Mizoram Home Minister R Lalzirliana has lamented that due to negligence on the part of the people, problem of climate change and scarcity of water sources is on the rise in the State. He was inaugurating a Forest department Rest House at Biate recently.

The people in the State have been ignorant of the need to protect trees and bamboos, forest and wildlife, he said. On the surface Mizoram appears as having a good forest cover, but in reality it has become one of the States in India which are without virgin forest, the Minister added.

The Minister expressed concern that some people hunted down over 200 birds a day using China-made Airgun with a scope put on it and added that more Awareness Campaigns would be necessary in this regard.

The State Forest Minister said that DCs of all the districts have been directed to impose a ban as per law on hunting of birds and other wildlife.
