Aizawl, 8 Dec (Zoram News): In a historic development, Lalduhoma, leader of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), took the oath as the new chief minister of Mizoram on Friday. Accompanied by 11 newly elected MLAs from the ZPM, he was sworn in by Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl.

Lalduhoma Sworn In as Mizoram Chief Minister, Unveils Priorities for New Government
At 74 years old, Lalduhoma, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is breaking the longstanding dominance of the Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram politics. His party, an alliance of six regional parties, secured a landslide victory in the recent Assembly elections, winning 27 out of 40 seats.

Lalduhoma's government is notable not only for being the first non-Congress, non-MNF administration since Mizoram's formation in 1987 but also for including the state's first woman minister of cabinet rank, Lalrinpuii.

The swearing-in ceremony saw the presence of former chief ministers Zoramthanga and Lal Thanhawla, acknowledging the political transition. Lalduhoma, in his first official statement, outlined his government's priorities, focusing on "farmer-friendly policies, fiscal reforms, and a drive against corruption."

The cabinet comprises seven ministers, including ZPM working president K Sapdanga, Vanlalhlana, C. Lalsawivunga, Lalthansanga, Vanlalthlana, PC Vanlalruata, and Lalrinpuii. Additionally, four ministers of state (independent charge) – F Rodingliana, B Lalchhanzova, Lalnilwama, and Lalnghinglova Hmar – were sworn in to support the new administration.

Lalduhoma, who faced disqualification as India's first MP under the anti-defection law during his career as an IPS officer, now leads a diverse team with portfolios assigned strategically. The new chief minister retains crucial portfolios such as finance, planning, and program implementation, signaling a proactive approach to governance.

After the swearing-in, Lalduhoma outlined 12 "priority programs" for implementation in the first 100 days of his government. Among them are initiatives in finance, planning, health and family welfare, social welfare, tribal affairs, and disaster management.

The inclusion of Lalrinpuii as the health and family welfare minister is a significant milestone, making her only the third woman in Mizoram's history to hold a ministerial position. Her responsibilities also extend to social welfare, tribal affairs, women and child development, and tourism.

As Mizoram witnesses a shift in political dynamics, Lalduhoma's administration sets the stage for inclusive governance and a renewed focus on pressing issues affecting the state.
