Cyclone Mocha Wreaks Havoc in Mizoram, Damaging Homes and Refugee Camps

Aizawl, 17 May (Zoram News): Mizoram, a northeastern Indian state, has been severely impacted by Cyclone Mocha, resulting in heavy rainfall and widespread devastation. The aftermath of the cyclone has left a trail of destruction, affecting local homes and refugee camps in the region.

Reports from state officials in the disaster management and rehabilitation department indicate that a total of 236 homes have been damaged by Cyclone Mocha. Furthermore, eight camps accommodating refugees from Myanmar have been completely destroyed. Of the affected homes, 27 were reported as fully damaged, 127 as severely damaged, and 82 as partially damaged.

According to official figures, approximately 5,789 individuals from 41 villages and towns across the state have been affected by the adverse weather conditions. The cyclone has also impacted 708 refugees from Myanmar residing in the eight refugee camps, necessitating their relocation to safer areas due to the destruction of the camps.

Siaha, the southernmost district of Mizoram, which shares a border with Myanmar, has been identified as the worst-hit area by the cyclone. Over 2,599 people from 24 villages in this district have been adversely affected. Lawngtlai district, which shares borders with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, is the second most severely affected district in the state. Approximately 2,204 individuals from eight villages in this district have experienced the brunt of heavy rain and winds. Additionally, 396 refugees from Myanmar have been affected as three camps in the district were damaged by the cyclone.

Lunglei district has also suffered the consequences of the cyclone, with 187 individuals from eight villages facing difficulties following its passage.

The state government is currently assessing the extent of the damages caused by Cyclone Mocha in Mizoram, with the aim of preparing an estimate to aid in relief and recovery efforts.
