Dr R Lalthangliana chaired Multi Sectoral Stakeholders Consultation on HIV/AIDS in Mizoram

Aizawl, 14 March (Zoram News): Health and Family Welfare Minister Pu Dr R Lalthangliana chaired the Multi Sectoral Stakeholders Consultation on HIV/AIDS in Mizoram at the Secretariat Conference Hall today.

In his opening speech, Dr Thangtea thanked UNAIDS, UNICEF, and other organization leaders for their efforts in the fight against AIDS. He emphasized the severity of HIV/AIDS as a major threat to the Mizote community, particularly youth, and noted that India has the highest percentage of AIDS cases in the world. He called for a collaborative effort among various departments, NGOs, and churches to combat the disease, citing the successful cooperation seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The meeting was attended by David Bridger, Country Director of UNAIDS, Melissa Nyendak, Program Director of CDC, Luigi D Aquino, UNICEF Chief of Health, and their respective team members, as well as leaders from churches, NGOs, and invited guests.

Representatives from UNAIDS, CDC, and UNICEF urged for more vigorous implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 AIDS eradication target.

Dr Lalthlengliani, Project Director of MSACS, highlighted the two major causes of AIDS in Mizoram - sexually transmitted diseases and drug use. He emphasized the highest number of AIDS cases occurring among those aged 25-34, followed by 35-44. He also mentioned that the NACP5 project is being implemented in collaboration with churches, NGOs, and government departments.

Meeting participants expressed their commitment to follow up on the decisions made during the consultation and to work together as necessary in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
