Mizoram reaffirms 1875 as the only acceptable boundary of Mizoram-Assam

Aizawl 31 July 2021: Mizoram Boundary Committee set up recently by the Mizoram government have their first meeting here in Aizawl yesterday under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Pu Tawnluia, the committee will to deal with demarcation of the state’s border with Assam. They have reaffirms Mizoram government stand of 1875 as the only boundary line which is acceptable to Mizoram. The meeting passed a resolution as the followings

 

  1. The demarcation of Mizoram’s boundary/border on its northern side is to be found only in the Inner Line of 1875. Hence, the Committee will continue its stance that the Mizoram-Assam Boundary be desirably resolved on the basis of this document alone.
  2. Border issues cannot be resolved through the means of force and thus, the matter should be settled through mutual dialogues and deliberations.
  3. The Committee strongly condemns the incursion of the Assam Police into the Mizoram Police Post at Vairengte on 26.07.2021, heavily outnumbering them and opening fire first. The Committee is deeply saddened over this avoidable yet unfortunate incident, in which a number of persons lost their lives and many injured.
  4. Memorandum for setting up of Boundary Commission for Settlement, Delimitation, and Demarcation of Boundary between Mizoram and Assam (2018), which was jointly signed by All Political Parties’ Presidents, All NGO Presidents and JAC, will be revised and amended as required. Sub-Committee/Working Group will be formed to pursue the matter.
  5. The Committee approves of the actions taken by the government on the Mizoram-Assam border issue and urges the government to continue taking steps courageously.
  6. As the border issue is intertwined with ethnic issues, it is our appeal to the people that they remain united on this matter, and show fortitude in the face of any inconveniences arising out of the situation.
  7. It is our appeal to the Mizo people not to create any hardships for non-Mizo residents in the state because of the current border issue.
  8. The Boundary Committee intends to protect our land as it was occupied by our forefathers to its utmost ability, and asks the people of Mizoram for their solidarity and support.

 

The committee comprises of Deputy Chief Minister Pu Tawnluia as Chairman and Home Minister Pu Lalchamliana as Vice Chairman, Home Secretary was made Member Secretary and representatives of NGOs, recognised political parties, Joint Action Committee on Inner Line Reserve Forest Demand apart from three ministers, chief secretary, additional chief secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), it said.
