Mizo man drowns while swimming in Meghalaya

Nonhstoin Jun 20 (Agencies) :In a tragic incident, a vacation turned ugly for a 39 years old man from Mizoram after he drowned in the river Nongbah located at New Nongstoin in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on Monday afternoon.

Sources informed that the deceased identified as David Zonun Sanga hails from Ramhul, North Aizawl District of Mizoram. Though an excellent swimmer, David however, couldn’t handle the current of the river and drowned.

It was informed that David had come to the state to stay for a few days with his elder brother, who currently works at Nongstoin. On that day, he decided to visit the river and take a dip in the river when the unfortunate incident happened.

Eyewitnesses said that the river is not that deep so David jumped into the river and swam from one end to the other but something happened and he lost control and drowned.

It was informed that labourers who were cleaning a nearby drain saw the incident and rushed to rescue the helpless swimmer, however, their inability to swim prevented them from moving towards the centre of the river.

They started shouting for help but by the time, people came, it was too late. The incident was immediately reported to the police.
After all the formalities were completed, the body has been handed over to the family members.
