Aizawl, 12 April (TNN): Aizawl: Bypolls in the 31 village councils in Aizawl and Kolasib districts will be held on May 19, according to the notification issued by the Mizoram State Election Commission on Tuesday.
The polls will be held in 25 villages in the Aizawl district and 6 villages in the Kolasib district, on the Mizoram-Assam border. There are 123 seats, of which 33 are reserved for women.
Elections to these village councils could not be held on April 30, 2015 as no one had filed nominations due to threats and intimidation by the Hmar People's Convention (Democrat) outfit, operating across the border from neighbouring Manipur.
SEC officials said the announcement for bypolls was made after the state government reported the atmosphere will be conducive to the conduct of polls as the Hmar armed group has lifted the boycott.
