Mizoram land issues highlighted in UN meet

Aizawl, 25 April: Addressing an UN meet with the theme, ‘Indigenous people in Asia in the Context of Business and Human Rights’, Zo Indigenous Forum Director C. Lalremruata highlighted Mizoram land issues in the First Asia Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights that was held in Qatar’s capital Doha recently.

Addressing the session Lalremruata talked about the ongoing India- Myanmar bilateral project Kaladan Multi Modal Transport Transit Project under East Act Policy and said it is the biggest foreign investment ever made by India. He also mentioned several difficulties faced by land owners in Mizoram and the problems in the construction of the road linking Chin state of Myanmar bordering Mizoram and the construction of the Sittwe port in Myanmar.

The ZIF Director also talked about the issue of compensation faced by the land owners along the under construction Kaladan road and present status of oil palm cultivation in Mizoram.
