Mizoram govt unveils Rs 8000-crore budget for 2016-17

Aizawl: Mizoram Finance Minister Lalsawta presented budget 2016-17 with proposals worth Rs 8,038.39 crore and supplementary demands for the current fiscal amounting to Rs 1,126.99 crore.

In a press note after presenting the budget in the state assembly, Lalsawta said that the government proposed to levy entry tax on commodities, including those purchased online, from April 1.

Before the start of the Assembly session House Leader Lal Thanhawla made obituary references to Sayeed (79) who died on January 7 last and Sangma (68) who died on March 4.

However, Lalsawta said that the ‘Mizoram Entry Tax Act, 2015’ would not be implemented if the Parliament legislates the GST Bill during the current session as the GST would cover all the items under the state’s Entry Tax Act.

He had failed to present regular budgets during the budget sessions in 2014 and 2015 as there was no clarity on plan fund allocation and central fund sharing pattern.

On the hand the Mizoram government has tied up with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to introduce ‘Connected Learning Initiative’ (CLIx) in 200 high schools to improve professional and academic prospects of students.
