Centre Approves ₹710 Crore for 45 Rural Road Projects in Mizoram

Aizawl, 1 November, 2026 (Zoram News): The Central Government has approved 45 rural road projects covering 509.54 kilometres in Mizoram at an estimated cost of ₹710.40 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-IV (PMGSY-IV) for the financial year 2026–27.

According to the Union Ministry of Rural Development, the projects have been sanctioned under Batch-I of PMGSY-IV and are expected to provide all-weather road connectivity to 48 habitations that have not previously had such access.

The approval is expected to improve rural connectivity and make it easier for residents of the identified habitations to access essential services, including schools, hospitals and rural markets. Improved road access is also expected to support economic activity and social development in the connected areas.

Mizoram's Rural Road Network to Expand

The latest approval forms part of the Centre's ongoing efforts to strengthen rural road infrastructure in Mizoram under PMGSY.

The Ministry of Rural Development stated that, in addition to the newly approved projects, Mizoram has already received sanctions for 367 road works covering approximately 4,935 kilometres, along with seven bridges. The combined estimated cost of these previously sanctioned works is ₹3,412 crore.

The latest allocation adds 45 road projects to the state's existing portfolio of sanctioned rural infrastructure works.

Better Access to Essential Services

The proposed roads are expected to improve connectivity for residents of remote and previously unconnected habitations, particularly in accessing healthcare, education and rural markets.

Reliable all-weather roads can also facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, goods and essential supplies while making travel between rural settlements and service centres easier throughout the year.

The projects are part of the broader objectives of PMGSY, a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at improving rural road connectivity across India.

Implementation to Be Key

While the approval marks a significant step towards expanding Mizoram's rural road network, the practical benefits will depend on the implementation and completion of the sanctioned projects.

The Ministry's announcement did not specify individual road alignments, construction commencement dates or project-wise completion schedules.

Once completed, the 509.54-kilometre network is expected to provide the 48 identified habitations with their first all-weather road connections, improving access to essential services and supporting rural development across the state.
