Mizoram State Museum Inaugurated to Preserve Mizo History and Cultural Heritage

Aizawl, 28 October 2026 (Zoram News): Mizoram Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga on Wednesday inaugurated the Mizoram State Museum at the New Secretariat Complex in Aizawl, marking an important step towards preserving and promoting the state's rich history, traditions and cultural identity.

The museum is envisioned as a centre for safeguarding the historical and cultural heritage of Mizoram while providing future generations with an opportunity to learn about the traditions and way of life of the Mizo people.

Speaking at the inauguration, Lalsawivunga emphasised that a museum serves a purpose beyond preserving historical objects. He said it helps connect the past with the present and plays an important role in protecting a community's identity, traditions and cultural legacy.

The minister expressed gratitude to the Union Ministry of Culture for funding the construction of the museum building. He also acknowledged the support provided by the Smart City initiative under the state Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Department for the interior works.

Described as a multipurpose museum, the institution is expected to serve as an educational resource, particularly for students and young people seeking to understand Mizoram's history and cultural heritage.

Lalsawivunga encouraged students and the younger generation to visit the museum regularly, stressing the importance of developing a greater appreciation for the state's historical institutions and cultural assets.

He also highlighted the contribution of individuals to the museum's collection, noting that more than half of the artefacts on display had been voluntarily donated by members of the public.

Appealing to people who possess historically or culturally significant objects, the minister urged them to come forward and contribute such items for preservation and public exhibition. He said collective participation was essential to safeguarding Mizoram's heritage.

The inauguration marks a significant development in the state's efforts to preserve its cultural legacy and make it accessible to the public. The museum is expected to help strengthen awareness of Mizo history among younger generations while providing a dedicated space for the preservation and appreciation of the state's cultural identity.

The minister also underscored that the museum represents Mizoram and its people, making its preservation a shared responsibility.
