Aizawl, 14 March (Zoram News): The vibrant spring festival of Chapchar Kut was celebrated with great enthusiasm in Aizawl, bringing together thousands of people for a grand display of traditional dances, cultural performances, and exhibitions.
The main celebration took place at the iconic Lammual Ground, where people dressed in colourful traditional attire gathered to mark one of the most important cultural festivals of Mizoram. The event marked the grand finale of a week-long series of festivities held across the state.
The festival this year was organised under the theme “Zo nun ze mawi – Inremna”, highlighting the importance of Mizo ethics and reconciliation within society.
Leaders Emphasise Unity and Mizo Values
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who served as the “Kut Pa” (Father of the festival), spoke about the importance of unity, responsibility, and reconciliation in society.
He emphasised that traditional Mizo values encourage individuals to take responsibility for their actions and work towards harmony rather than conflict. The Chief Minister also urged people, especially youth, to maintain respectful dialogue even in times of disagreement.
The celebration was attended by several dignitaries including Mizoram Governor V. K. Singh and the state’s Art and Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga.
Cultural Performances and Exhibitions
The festival featured a wide range of cultural activities aimed at preserving and showcasing Mizo heritage.
Traditional dances such as Cheraw dance—often called the bamboo dance—were among the highlights of the event. The dance involves performers rhythmically moving between bamboo poles, demonstrating coordination and skill.
Other cultural attractions included handloom and handicraft exhibitions, food processing demonstrations, flower shows, and a living museum that showcased traditional Mizo lifestyle and customs.
Photo and painting exhibitions, along with film screenings related to the festival, were also organised during the week-long celebration.
One of Mizoram’s Most Important Festivals
Chapchar Kut is the largest and most significant spring festival of the Mizo people, traditionally celebrated after the completion of clearing forests for jhum cultivation.
Historians believe the festival originated between the 15th and 17th centuries and has since become a major cultural event in the region. After being discouraged during the colonial missionary period, the festival was revived on a large scale in the 1970s and continues to be celebrated annually.
The celebrations in Aizawl also attracted visitors from different parts of India and abroad, including members of the Mizo diaspora and tourists interested in experiencing the state’s vibrant culture.
