NIT Aizawl to host 3-day Hackathon event to find tech solutions for policing challenges

Aizawl, 27 April (Zoram News): Mizoram Police, in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Aizawl, has organized a three-day Hackathon event at the Arya Mess, PHQ, Aizawl. The event was inaugurated by Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, in the presence of DGP Mizoram, Pu Devesh Chandra Srivastava.

The Hackathon aims to provide a platform for talented tech students from various institutes, including NITs all over India, MZU, Govt Zirtiri Residential College, NIELIT, and ICFAI, to showcase their skills and creativity. The participants will provide ideas and solutions for solving day-to-day challenges faced by the police, such as law-and-order issues, traffic management, drug detection, and general crime investigation.

Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati commended the Mizoram Police for dealing with various law-and-order issues, traffic management, drug detection, and general crime investigation, and praised the collaboration with NIT Mizoram for organizing this Hack-venture event. He urged the participants to provide their best ideas and solutions for the benefit of the country and its law enforcement-related works.

DGP Pu Devesh Chandra Srivastava gave a detailed account of how smart policing has been implemented across India after the initiatives taken up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He spoke about the issues pertaining to cybercrime, cyber security, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and Aizawl City Traffic management that need to be addressed. He briefed that over 1033 cases of cybercrimes have been registered by the Mizoram police, and 54 offenders were arrested with 16 people convicted in connection with cybercrime in the state.

The Hackathon event is scheduled from 27 April to 29 April 2023 and will include events such as a cyber security quiz, web development challenge, and idea pitching contests, with an overall theme of improving police functioning through information technology solutions. The event will feature talks from subject matter experts from Central Government agencies such as Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (14C), and National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and Cyber Security experts from the industry. Students from various institutions in Mizoram and NITs all over India will be participating in this three-day event.

The Hackathon program aims to build and strengthen police-public relations, engaging youth and inviting new ideas and solutions from them to solve day-to-day challenges faced by the police. Top police officers, teaching faculty of the participating institutes, and other invitees attended the event. The inaugural function commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Sandeep Kumar Dash, HoD, CSE, NIT, followed by an introductory speech on the event by Dr. Lalthanchami Sailo, Registrar, NIT. The inaugural program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Lalhruaizela, Asst Prof, CSE, NIT.
