Lalnunthara bags gold in National weightlifting championships

Bhubaneswar, 23 March (zoramnews): The National Weightlifting Championship has started in Odisha's Bhubaneshwar on Sunday where over 800 weightlifters will be participating from across 30 states.

The event will last till March 31 and will witness some of the finest weightlifters across age and event categories. Indian Weightlifting Federation in association with Odisha Weightlifting Association is conducting the event.

This competition is the qualifier for the 5th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games, 2022 which is scheduled to be held later this year. This will also be considered a Selection Trial for the IWF Youth and Junior World Championships both for eligible lifters.

Lalhunthara of Mizoram lifted a total of 269kg to take the junior title in 67kg. S. Logeshwaran of Tamil Nadu won the youth gold medal with an aggregate of 254kg.

Manjunath Marati warded off a strong challenge from 18-year-old Markio Tario to claim the men’s 67kg gold medal in the National weightlifting championships at the KIIT University campus here on Wednesday.

Manjunath, who stayed one kg ahead of nine years younger Markio in both snatch and clean and jerk, recorded a total of 284kg and won by two kg.
