Aizawl FC coach confident as I-League resumes

Aizawl, 3 March (TNN): I-League is all set to resume on Thursday in West Bengal after a break of more than two months following a Covid outbreak in the camps immediately after the first round. All eyes will be on the tie involving former champions Aizawl FC and Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC) at Kalyani in the evening.

Aizawl FCThe last time the two teams met, Aizawl had won 3-0 and that was in the backdrop of coach Yan Law’s expulsion by Mohammedan Sporting last season. Lot of time has gone by since then and Law, who took up the reins of Aizawl next, is hoping to restart the season on a high after they had lost their opening and only tie against Real Kashmir in December last year.

Law is aware that it’s not going to be an easy affair. “Mohammedan SC are a great team and one of the title contenders. They are very well prepared, had a great pre-season and made some good signings in the January window. So, this is going be very tough game for us,” said Law during a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

After finishing sixth in the league last season, Mohammedan Sporting have won the Calcutta Football League, finished runners up in Durand Cup and played IFA Shield where they lost to Real Kashmir in the quarterfinal stage.

On the other hand, Aizawl’s first official game after last season was their first match of I-League against Real Kashmir. After the league was halted, Aizawl were once again back to square one and began preparing only when the new schedule was announced.
“We had about two and a half weeks of training and the players understand what we need to do to improve. Also, the biggest positive is that all the new signings are available for the game which gives the squad a lot of depth,” added Law.

The two major foreign signings made during January transfer window are Bakhtiyor Kalandrov and Robert Primu Jr. The other two foreign recruits are the attacking duo of Willis Plaza and Aser Pierrick Dipanda Dicka, two players who can create havoc in opposition defence on any given day.
