4.6 magnitude earthquake hits Mizoram’s Champhai, no casualties

Aizawl , 20 Sep (Newsmai): Earthquakes continue to occur in Mizoram after the state experienced its first one in this series on June 18.

Reports said that people in Champhai district of Mizoram felt 80 to 100 tremors including aftershocks since June 18, 2020. The latest one occurred on Sunday morning in the state. However, the exact number of earthquakes which have occurred since June 18, 2020 was not officially confirmed.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the latest one was measured 4.6 on the Richter scale which occurred at 7:29 am and the epicenter was 60 km south southeast of Champhai.

Officials said there was no damage reported till date. The officials, however, said that nearly 300 houses have been damaged due to the series of earthquakes since June 18, 2020.

It can be mentioned here that, after several earthquakes had occurred in Mizoram, many residents in Champhai district have been going to makeshift structures or bamboo-polythene tents during the nights for safety, according to reports.

Most of the epicentres of all the earthquakes were said to be in Champhai district bordering Myanmar.

The districts of Champhai, Saitual, Siaha and Serchhip had experienced several earthquakes since June 18.

In the month of July, geologists had said that “minor faults” that exist between the two major faults could probably be the reasons behind the series of earthquakes.

Earlier, Mizoram Government had sought the help of the Central government as earthquakes continue to occur in the State. The Zoramthanga government had requested the Centre to send seismologists to the State to have a thorough study.

It can also be mentioned here that several houses, including church buildings and government buildings, were partially damaged at Zokhawthar in Champhai district by the impact of the earthquakes. Several structures were also damaged by the earthquakes in 7 villages within Khawbung Rural Development Block in Champhai district.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah had expressed their concerns on June 22 on the occurrence of the calamities in Mizoram. Both the leaders had then assured all possible assistance from the Central government to Mizoram.
