ASEAN Ambassadors to visit Mizoram

Aizawl, 2 March 2020 (NNN): Ten ambassadors of ASEAN countries with their spouses will arrive in Mizoram on March 4 for a five day visit to the state.

They will also visit Myanmar’s Chin state.

Two months ago, these envoys visited Manipur and went up to the Moreh Tamu crossing.

Mizoram celebrates Chapchar Kut, one of its big festivals this week and the envoys will be in the state during that time.

“We want to look closely at the emerging connectivity between Northeast India and Myanmar’s border regions. It has much importance for Southeast Asian countries,” said a Vietnamese diplomat to Northeast Now. He will be visiting Mizoram between March 4 and 9.

Myanmar’s Mizzima group is the media partner for the event.

“Such visits aim to promote tourism, trade and people to people contact not only between India and Myanmar but also with Asean countries across all strategic crossings,” said Mizzima chief editor Soe Myint.

There is much excitement in Mizoram.

“This is a great opportunity for our remote state to sell ourselves. I hope we make the most of it,” says L R Sailo, former Mizoram bureaucrat and policy analyst.

After Mizoram, the envoys will also visit Chin state.
