Agitation against opening of wine shop in Mizoram

Aizawl, June 2 (NNN): Organised under the aegis of Salem Veng Joint Action Committee, locals of Salem Veng on Wednesday took out a procession in protest against opening of standard wine shop in their locality.

The protest was joined by many locals including women, elders and youths during which protesters carried placards showing resistance against opening of wine shop. The procession was held from Salem Veng Mini Market up to the place where wine shop was opened.

Speaking during the procession Salem Veng JAC chairman Reuben Larinsanga strictly maintained that the locals of Salem strongly objected the selling of liquor and drugs in their locality. He said that they have told the person who run wine shop at their locality that they strongly dislike opening of wine shop. “We have warned him not to sell liquor at out locality. But the person paid a deaf year to our request and continued to sell liquor for which we are very disappointed,” he said.

“We can’t accept the fact that our MLA who is expected to show love and kindness to the locals letting his relative to open wine shop at our locality and our locals will never allow liquor to be sold in our area,” he added.

About 10 wine shops have come up in Aizawl city after the implementation of newly legislated Mizoram Liquor Prohibition and Control Act, 2014 since January 15 last year.
