327 candidates in fray for 97 VC seats

Aizawl, May 2 - At least 327 candidates have filed nomination for 97 seats in the upcoming Village Council election in 25 villages in Aizawl district which would be held together with six Village Councils in Kolasib district on May 19.

While Congress has fielded the highest number candidates in 99 seats, MPC has filed nomination for only one seat. Of the 97 seats, 27 are reserved for woman and there are 75 woman candidates in fray for the VC election in Aizawl district.

In Aizawl district, scrutiny of nomination papers was held on April 28 and no candidate has withdrawn nomination till the last date of withdrawal on April 29.

Congress has the highest number of 99 candidates of which 27 were for reserved seats. Main opposition Mizo National Front has fielded candidates for 90 seats of which 21 were reserved. BJP has fielded 45 candidates (12 reserved) followed by Zoram Nationalist Party with 20 candidates (2 reserved).

In the six Village Councils in Kolasib district, the number of candidates till last date of withdrawal of candidature could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report. There are 26 Village Council seats in Kolasib district.

The electorate of 16,051 from 4,365 households in Aizawl district and 4,439 voters from 1,326 families in Kolasib district are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 123 members, of which 33 seats were reserved for women.

Election to the 31 Village Councils in North Mizoram could not be held along with the rest of the State in April last year as no candidate filed nomination due to the threats from the Hmar People's Convention (Democrats) militants. The bypolls to these village councils was announced by the State Election Commission on April 12.
