Aizawl, April 15: Mizo National Front (MNF) senior vice president Tawnluia on Friday appealed to both the state Government and the Hmar People’s Convention (Democrats) to come to negotiating table. He was addressing a party meeting at Mizo Hnam Run today. While expressing happiness at the government’s decision to conduct bypolls to 31 Village councils after a gap of one year, Tawnluia said the Government must maintain strict law and order to ensure a free and fair VC election in the areas.
Accusing the Congress government of failing to conduct VC election in North Mizoram along with rest of the state in April last year due to the threats from the militants, former Home Minister Tawnluia said the government paid a deaf ear to the safety of people in this area despite repeated appeals made from different quarters.
He said that in spite of eagerness from the militant side, peace talks could not be initiated as the government set conditions. “This is truly non-diplomatic and the Government should instead open opportunity for unconditional talks.” he added.
MNF senior vice president also slammed the ruling government for its initial decision to declared HPC (D) demand area or North Mizoram as ‘disturb area’ which he said received strong resistance from the opposition as well as civil societies.
He said that the opposition MNF would never allow this area to be declared ‘disturb area’ and used as an opportunity to make money out of it.
Heaping praise on the MNF rule, he said it was diplomatically able to crash the growing militancy among various militant groups to lead normal life and added that the opposition MNF was a pioneer in voicing the re-unification of all Zo descendants in different parts of the world.
Meanwhile, the government has extended the tenure of Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) for another one year.
The term of SHDC has been extended from first June, 2016 to thirty first May, 2017simultaneously with the tenure of council chairman and council members, official statement said Friday.
