BSF organizes International Women's Day to arouse legal awareness

SILCHAR, March 10: As a part of observance of International Women’s Day, Mizoram and Cachar Frontier of the BSF in collaboration with the Law Department of Assam University organized two day “Law Awareness Programme” which concluded on Wednesday. It was held for the women members as well as female constables of the elite Force in BSF Campus Masimpur. The day is celebrated across the world every year since in 1975 when the United Nations declared it as a day for women. It is a day of reckoning to understand and acknowledge their contributions in the development of society and nation building.

The theme for this year is ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030, signifying reaching the goal of gender equality. Satish Budakoti, DIG hqrs BSF Mizoram and Cachar, said the programmes conducted included a small skit by the students of the Law Department of Assam University depicting present day ailments that have besieged the society, lectures on women and Indian constitution, women and family life, criminal law and women, law relating to working women and women and customs of the society as well as interactive sessions between the faculty and audience.

It was organized with the objective of increasing awareness among women of their legal rights and empower them with the knowledge to address any wrong they see around them. Dinesh Kumar Upadhyaya, Inspector General, inaugurated the eventful day celebration in the presence of senior officers of the Force. The programme was enlivened by the kind presence of prominent dignitaries from Assam University who included Dr Madhumita Dhar Sarkar, head, Department of Law, Prof Umesh Sarkar, Dr. Barunjyoti Chaudhury and 15 other faculty members, besides students.

A large number of female members of BSF attended the programme. Addressing the assembly, Dinesh Kumar Upadhyaya spoke about the invaluable contribution of Indian women during the freedom struggle, social development, literature and science. He drew their attention to the increasing presence of successful Indian ladies in the business world, armed forces and BSF. He called upon them to become aware of their legal rights in order to fight for justice for themselves and also for society. The programme was sponsored by National Commission for Women, New Delh
