Assam has reported the highest rate of incidence of crime against children in the Northeast, though compared at the national level the rate is pretty low at 1.03 per cent of the total number of crimes registered.
Assam recorded a high of 392 cases and was followed by Manipur with 104, Mizoram with 95, Meghalaya with 91 and Arunachal Pradesh with 39, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau.
The NCRB report said that the Northeastern states in general, barring Assam, have a crime rate against children of less than one per cent.
Nagaland appears to be the most child-friendly state in the country with only 13 cases reported while Tripura and Sikkim have also recorded a low of 20 and 30 cases respectively.
Uttar Pradesh heads the list with 6,033 cases and was followed by Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar with 5,168, 3,456 and 2,894 cases respectively.
Assam registered the highest number of child rapes with 156 cases registered followed by Meghalaya and Mizoram with 81 and 73 cases respectively.
Nagaland registered the least number of cases with seven while Tripura and Manipur reported 17 cases each, Arunachal Pradesh 18 and Sikkim 21.
Assam also recorded 15 cases of murder of children while Manipur reported four, Tripura-two and Mizoram and Nagaland had registered one case each.
Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim had reported no cases of murder of children.
There was no case of infanticide reported from any of the Northeastern states, barring Sikkim where one case was registered.
Assam recorded the highest 691 cases involving crimes against children taken up for investigation, including those pending from the previous year while Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram registered 437, 421 and 109 respectively.
Tripura had 83, Sikkim-52, Arunachal Pradesh 48 and Nagaland 33 cases under investigation.
Assam had the highest number of 624 cases under arrest, including those from previous year for crimes committed against children while Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura had arrested 201, 132, 110 and 80 persons.
In Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim 45, 33 and 31 persons were arrested in this connection.
In Assam, 564 cases came up for trial, including pending cases from previous year, while in Tripura-364, Meghalaya 236, Arunachal 186, Mizoram 143 and Sikkim 125 cases were at the trial stage.
In Nagaland, 23 cases were under trial while Manipur had a low trial rate of only five cases.
In Assam, trial of only 67 cases were completed and two persons were convicted while in Manipur, no trial was completed.
In Nagaland, 33 cases came up for trial and all were completed with conviction in all the cases while Sikkim had the highest rate of conviction of 46 persons out of the 62 trials completed and was followed by Mizoram with 39 convictions in 41 completed trials.
Tripura recorded the highest number of 129 trials that saw conviction in 20 cases while two convictions each were reported in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya out of the five and ten completed trials respectively.
