Meet on earthquake held in Aizawl

AIZAWL, April 22: A 3-day programme for ‘Technical Panel Meeting on Earthquake and Landslide Risk Reduction of Aizawl’ jointly organized by Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department and GeoHazards Society (partners with GeoHzards International) has kick-started this morning at Secretariat Conference Hall.

Today’s programme was participated by L. Thomas Tobin (Ex-Director, California Seismic Safety Commission Policy Advisor), Leonardo Seeber (Columbia University- Seismology, USA), D. Srinagesh (National Geophysical Reserach Institute, Hyderabad- Seismology), Kevin Clahan (San Francisco-Engineering Geologist, USA), Bill Holmes (FEMA Consultant, California-Earthquake Engineer, USA), Prof.Pradeep Ramancharla (IIIT, Hyderabad- Earthquake Engineer), Dr. Janise Rodgers (GeoHazards International-Earthquake Engineer, USA), Larry Mintier (Sacramento- Landuse Planner, USA), Prof.Ajay Katur (Centre for Environmental Planning & Technology, Ahmedabad- Land Use Planner), Hari Kumar (President, GeoHazards Society-Disaster Manager, Delhi) and Mrinal Nath (GeoHazards Society-Mitigation Specialist).

The meeting was inaugurated by H.Liansailova, Mizoram Finance minister as chief guest while Nihar Kanti Chakma as guest of honour.

The panel meeting was guided by PCLallawmsanga, DM&R Principal Secretary where chief guest in his inaugural speech said that Aizawl is under Seismic Zone V and interprets various consequences on relevant Seismic Zone V.

To study and help Mizoram a team from Geo Hazards International had came and visited the field made project and having training programme on this.

Meanwhile , Nihar Kanti Chakma, DM&R minister thanked the team of GeoHazards International to share their experience towards Mizo people.

The DM&R minister highlighted about L.Thomas Tobin who is Sr. Adviser of GeoHazards International and discussed various types of earth quake and its consequences.

Further Geology & Mining Jt. Director Dr. Lallenmawia harped on the seismic condition in Mizoram land (ill geological set-up) and revealed about High Risk, Moderate Risk and Low Risk Area in Mizoram.
